Kobe Bryant’s signed jersey from his MVP season that made history sold for $5.8 million. It marks the second most expensive basketball jersey ever sold behind Michael Jordan’s jersey sold in 1998.

The auctioneer, Sotheby’s, put the market value of the sports artifact to sell for nearly $7 million ahead of the auction that took place on Feb. 9. Sotheby’s said it’s now the “most valuable Bryant item” ever sold at an auction and the second most expensive basketball jersey sold. 

The jersey was signed by Kobe himself and was worn during game two of the 2008 Western Conference Quarterfinals, where an iconic image was captured of Kobe screaming and pumping his chest. The auction house did not name the buyer who purchased the jersey at $5.8 million or if it will ever be on display.

Kobe Bryant’s Lakers jersey will be auctioned off and expected to sell for $7 million. The jersey was worn in over 25 games and featured in a picture Sotheby calls the “most iconic images.”

The auctioneer, Sotheby, plans to start the bidding for Kobe Bryant’s Lakers jersey at $5M with a starting window of up to $7M. The jersey is shown in the iconic image from game two of the Western Conference Quarterfinals in 2008.

The image shows Kobe screaming and pumping his chest after he scored and secured his team a significant lead in the game versus the Denver Nuggets. Additionally, Kobe wore the jersey more than 25 times and autographed it.

Kobe’s Jersey 2nd Highest Price Since Michael Jordan?

If a bidder pays the predicted amount, it will be the second-highest price ever for a basketball jersey. Michael Jordan’s jersey was the only one that fetched more money during the 1998 NBA finals, which sold for $10M.

The jersey comes just in time for the anniversary of Kobe’s death on Jan. 26, 2020, and has since been honored by many celebrities and his family following the plane crash that ended his life. Sotheby is a famed auction house dating back to the 1700s and has a dynamic marketplace for art and luxury.

The auction will be held from Feb. 2-9.

Kobe Bryant’s Daughter Seeks Restraining Order Against Stalker
