Vancouver’s Finest: How Boomer The Drummer and OBE G Are Taking Over the Music Scene

Boomer The Drummer and OBE G are two musicians making waves in a city renowned for its natural beauty and cultural variety. Both have interesting backstories and musical influences, yet they both want to make music that people can relate to.

Boomer The Drummer’s path began in his youth, when he would sit in front of his record player and pound on various kitchen utensils. Throughout his whole life, he had participated in school bands, but it wasn’t until he tried playing bass and guitar that he realized his true calling was on the drums. At 14, he got his first drum kit, and by 15, he was playing in a jazz band all throughout California. He has shared the stage with jazz greats, punk rockers, metalheads, and hip hop pioneers alike. Boomer’s drumming takes cues from Blink 182’s Travis Barker and The Chainsmokers’ Matt Mcguire (once of YouTube fame). The music from films has also been an influence on his output.

Conversely, OBE G began his musical career when he was barely two years old. He used to entertain passers-by by singing on the street corner in front of his house. As he matured, he began singing in church choruses and attending bible college to study music. Eventually, he released his debut single, “Reflections Ft. Aye1ne,” for which he had taught himself to compose hip-hop beats. Canadian hip-hop acts such as the Rascalz, Cardinal Official, and Sweatshop Union, as well as Vancouver’s own Messiah Profit, have all had major musical influences on him. OBE G’s method for coming up with new material is to listen to music until he finds a beat he likes, and then to just start freestyling over it.

Boomer and OBE G have both found success in Vancouver and beyond, despite coming from quite different musical backgrounds and having very different musical approaches. OBE G’s distinctive vocal and producing approach has set him apart in the hip-hop arena, while Boomer’s adaptability as a drummer has allowed him to collaborate with a wide range of artists.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance has proven difficult for both performers. Boomer puts in at least 10 additional hours a week on top of his 70 hours a week in the film industry to pursue his music career. OBE G composes music mostly for his own therapeutic benefit, a way to release pent-up emotions and gain perspective. Both have learned the value of pausing when necessary and understanding that incremental progress is just as significant as giant leaps.

Boomer The Drummer hopes to one day become a full-time musician and producer by way of extensive touring and the creation of groundbreaking drum remixes. He realizes that even incremental progress toward his goals is valuable, therefore he works on them every day.

Nonetheless, OBE G has a large team supporting his music and is consistently releasing new material throughout the year. He’s pumped to finally release a sample bundle of the hip-hop and vocal singing tracks he’s been working on for so long. He has great hopes for his music career, as he has already received offers to perform at major international festivals.

In sum, Vancouver’s Boomer The Drummer and OBE G’s success prove that they are two brilliant musicians. They continue to break new ground in the music industry thanks to the eclectic nature of their influences, methods of creation, and personal histories.
